SCOTLAND
OUR SCOTTISH EXPERIENCE AND THE L2

Our recent visit to Scotland to conduct a clinic on the Lateral Line style of putting opened our eyes to the meaning of tradition. The Lateral Line style and L2 putter were warmly accepted and used. In the land where golf began, you would not expect such a reception. There is nothing traditional about our program. But what we soon saw for ourselves is that the Scotts view tradition at a deeper level than that. Tradition is a state of being there that places them in the moment, with grace, adherence to the rules, and a connection with the course that makes every game a deep experience. They not only repair their ball marks but every ball mark they see. New divots and old are not just replaced in a hurry but replanted with attention. A scrap of paper that got away from one player on a windy day does not go far before it is grabbed by another. Balls are played as they lay and every stroke is given the same attention whether it is a 250 yard drive or a 3 inch putt.
Tradition is the heart of the game not a certain way to stroke a ball or what you stroke it with. As long as it conforms to the rules it will be considered and excepted. There reverance for the game allows them the freedom to embrace logical advancments that improves their score and reenergizes their willingness to try something different.
My son and I will always view golf in a different light thanks to our new friends. The Scottish Disability Golf Partneship members demonstrated the true tradition of golf with an ease and comfort that made leaving hard, and returning a priority.
A special thanks to Jim Giles the director of SDGP and Paul Shepherd his amazing coach and friend, and to Steve and Elaine Bramwell for their pictures and kindness.
